Lextar & Beck

A strong partnership

Since January 2013, Lextar and BECK have enjoyed an 8-year business relationship, with the aim of working together to secure a competitive advantage for our customers in the rapidly growing LED market in Central Europe through the latest technologies and best products. While Lextar provides product support and technical know-how, BECK contributes as a local contact through decades of experience in the component market in the D-A-CH region. Over the years, the partnership between the two companies has grown steadily. Lextar, as a strategic supply partner for AUO backlights, has developed its portfolio into more specialized products such as RGB, IR & UV(C) LEDs or VCSEL for "Time of Flight" (ToF) applications and has entered highly professional markets such as the automotive industry. It is precisely in these two areas that BECK is at home as a distributor. Therefore, Lextar and BECK are entering into a strategic partnership to support the European automotive market with new and advanced backlight technologies, such as the "Mini-LED" backlights.

Edge-lit vs. Mini Direct-lit

Edge-lit panels illuminate with the help of a reflective foil, which reflects light emitted from the side of the housing or by light being randomly coupled out of the light guide. Thus, it is a relatively inefficient method of backlighting.

Direct-lit panels using Lextar's mini LED modules, on the other hand, are much more efficient because the light is distributed evenly and directly through the LCD panel. It does not have to be distributed and coupled out along a fiber optic cable across the display.

The result is low power consumption with higher brightness, while maintaining 100% color accuracy and achieving a lifetime of well over 50,000 hours.

In a direct comparison, the "Direct-lit panel" on the left needs 6.4 W to generate 987 cd/m², while a comparable "Edge-lit" panel only achieves 315 cd/m² with 8.2W.

Lextar's patented solution approach:

Instead of single white LEDs in the backlight, Lextar relies on an array of powerful blue LEDs on a flip-chip basis that are coated together with a multichromatic phosphor film (KSF film) for white light conversion. This reduces the natural variance of the emission light and achieves a better coverage of the spectral color space compared to single-LED solutions.

The use of these Mini LED Light Boards also provides supply chain advantages. "Normal" LED backlights require many components from different manufacturers, whereas the use of Mini LED Light Boards offers an "all-in-one" solution.

Many of our customers in the automotive industry, such as Daimler, VW or FCA Renault, already benefit from our experience and partnership with Lextar.

And now it's your turn!
