More Than Just Displays: How Sensor Technology Makes Industrial Displays Smart

Displays show information – but it is sensor technology that truly makes them smart. Only when relevant environmental conditions are captured can systems respond appropriately to their surroundings. This is exactly where BECK Sensor Boards come into play: With a continuously growing portfolio, BECK offers compact and robust sensor solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing display systems.

The current product range includes an ambient light sensor, a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, and a proximity sensor. All sensor boards are designed to work directly with BECK TFT controllers such as the BTC-mini, BTC-mini-eDP, or the DCMR-64. Signal processing is performed entirely on the controller. No additional hardware or software stacks are required.

A major benefit for our customers: Key functions are already available out of the box. Whether it is adaptive brightness control based on ambient light or overheating protection with automatic display dimming, these ready-to-use features save valuable development time and reduce integration effort.

At the same time, the system remains flexible. Sensor boards can either be delivered preconfigured by BECK or customized by the customer, either directly via the OSD or alternatively using the BECK TFT Configurator. This means full control with minimal time investment – ideal for both series production and prototyping.

The sensor boards are complemented by the new BECK fan module, which is also connected directly to the TFT controller. It enables temperature-dependent control of multiple fans based on the connected temperature sensors. This creates a smart, fully integrated, controller-driven cooling concept that is ideal for high-performance or enclosed systems.

Possible applications of BECK Sensor Boards include:

  • HMI: Adaptive display brightness in industrial environments and optional monitoring of temperature and humidity directly in the control panel.
  • POI / Public Displays: Optimal readability under changing lighting conditions and protection against thermal overload during continuous operation.
  • POS / Self-Service: Distance-based activation or brightness switching for energy-efficient and attention-grabbing systems.
  • Outdoor: Dynamic operation under sun, heat, cold, and humidity – without additional control hardware.
  • Predictive Maintenance: Monitoring device parameters to detect potential failures early and prevent downtime.

While operating temperature is monitored via temperature sensors and actively regulated using connected fans, ambient light and distance sensors ensure optimal readability combined with energy-efficient system design. In addition, a humidity sensor provides relevant condition data for predictive maintenance purposes.
